ABET Accreditation for Engineering Institutes

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help engineering institutes navigate the ABET accreditation process:

  1. Verify Program Eligibility: Ensure your undergraduate or postgraduate program includes “Engineering” in its name for the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) to consider it.

  1. Gather Information: Before formally applying, obtain detailed information from the EAC to address any questions or concerns.

  1. Prepare Your Request for Evaluation (RFE): Draft a separate RFE for each commission, depending on the program for which you are applying.

  1. Secure RFE Approval from NBA: Obtain approval from the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) by January 31st of the calendar year you intend to apply. Ensure all authority for degree granting is in place.

  1. Submit RFE: Submit the RFE by January 31st and await acceptance. The RFE will be uploaded to the ABET website once accepted.

  1. ABET Assigns Team Chair: ABET will assign a Team Chair to guide your institution through the accreditation process.

  1. Pay Required Fees: Submit the accreditation fees as specified on the ABET website.

  1. Submit Self-Study Report (SSR): By July 1st, submit the SSR, which should cover all seven criteria, along with necessary transcripts, to both ABET headquarters and the assigned Team Chair.

  1. Onsite Review: A team of three ABET experts will conduct an onsite review over three days.

  1. Accreditation Outcome: There is no ranking or grading; the institution will be either Accredited or Not Accredited.

  1. Review Cycle: The next review typically occurs six years after the initial accreditation.

  1. Review of Evaluation: Deans are provided with the evaluation by the peer review team to check for any factual errors.

AACSB Accreditation Process for Management Schools

For management schools considering AACSB accreditation, be prepared for a comprehensive and time-intensive process that can take over two years. Here’s what you need to know:

  1. Start the Application Process Early: Submit your eligibility application through the accreditation portal at any time of the year, along with the non-refundable eligibility application fee. The application should not exceed 35 pages, excluding tables.

  1. Preliminary Review: Institutes may submit a draft of their eligibility application for a preliminary review before formal submission.

  1. Mentor Assignment: Within three months of application acceptance, a mentor is assigned for two years to assist in preparing the Initial Self-Evaluation Report (iSER). The institution should arrange for the mentor’s visit. Following the mentor’s visit, the institution submits the iSER, which includes background information, a gap analysis, and an environmental evaluation (approximately 100 pages).

  1. Transition to Chair: After the iSER is accepted, the mentor’s role transitions to a Chair who helps the institution finalize the Self-Evaluation Report (SER) after implementing the recommendations from the iSER.

  1. Eligibility Application Components: The application includes five parts reviewed by the Initial Accreditation Committee (IAC), which may indicate deficiencies on the website:

   – Institutional Contact Information

   – Background Information

   – AACSB Eligibility Criteria

   – Faculty Composition and Research

   – Engagement, Innovation, and Impact

  1. Core Values and Guiding Principles: Your application must address the following core values and criteria:

   – Criteria A: Ethical Behavior

   – Criteria B: Collegiate Environment

   – Criteria C: Commitment to Corporate and Social Responsibility

  1. General Criteria for Eligibility:

   – Criteria D: Accreditation Scope & AACSB Membership

   – Criteria E: Oversight, Sustainability, and Continuous Improvement

   – Criteria F: Policy on Continuous Adherence to Standards and Integrity of Submission to AACSB

  1. Peer Review Team Visit: The process culminates in a visit from the Peer Review Team. The next review is scheduled five years after the initial accreditation.
